Guitarist, singer and songwriter Ken Woods is probably more widely known via his alter-ego: as the American conductor, cellist and composer Kenneth Woods. With over 50 recordings to his credit, including many ‘best of the year’ awards from publications like The Times, Gramophone and Forbes, Kenneth is the Artistic Director of the English Symphony Orchestra, the Elgar Festival and Colorado MahlerFest.
Ken is a guitarist with a fiery temperament and a blazing technique, whose playing embraces the lessons of the masters from the great traditions of blues, rock, jazz, country and folk music. He’s also a songwriter whose language spans the full breadth of American music and whose technique is underpinned by his classical training. His lyrics reflect his passions for word play, history, justice and humor.

What the critics are saying
“a Roots-Rock Reckoning That Hits Like a Hammer…
Lead single Steel Stretcher doesn’t just slap—it detonates. Think Woody Guthrie meets Rage Against the Machine in a bar fight: metal-on-metal percussion, apocalyptic slide riffs, and a lyric sheet that spits truth like shrapnel. Halfway through, it melts into a sludge-metal fever dream before snapping back to a defiant, foot-stomping groove that dares to ask: When the building of the iron road is through, will America have any use for you?… Woods digs up the bones of America’s past, sets them on fire, and plays lead guitar over the flames.” Frank Bell – Fame Magazine
“This is not nostalgia. It’s not heroism in disguise. Silent Spike is about what was buried—bodies, names, entire legacies—and what it means to unearth them. It is as much about American music as it is about American myth, and Woods’ ability to weave them together makes the record both timely and timeless. The album closes with Gather the Ghosts and Bones, a delicate goodbye, a reluctant peace. But its quietness doesn’t erase what came before—it deepens it. Silent Spike stands as a monumental gesture of historical listening. It is protest through melody, memory as composition. And in daring to feel so deeply, Ken Woods and The Old Blue Gang have built something rare: a record that not only sounds, but remembers.” Garcia Penned, Euphony Blognet
Forthcoming Records
Silent Spike – The forthcoming concept album from Ken Woods and the Old Blue Gang
Older and Bluer – The Old Blue Gang Rides Again
American Catastrophe - The Debut Album from the Electric Reckoning
Silent Spike is a concept album that provides a meditation on the experiences of the “Railroad Chinese” who built the first Transcontinental Railways in Oregon, California and Washington. It’s a story nearly a century long, starting with the first ocean crossings of the migrant workers and the building of the railway that made America a true two-coastal nation.
Conceived as a complete contrast to the deadly serious tone of Silent Spike, The Old Blue Gang Rides Again shows the musicians of the OBG performing a body of new originals celebrating blues, Zydeco, Dixieland, country, rock and folk. Songs range from the slow blues “One Time Lover” to the hilarious “Half a Divorce.” Coming in Summer 2025
What happens when you leave the train of history to run in the wrong direction for 45 years? American Catastrophe by Ken Woods and the Electric Reckoning offers up a bleak vision of the generation in which it all went wrong, from the coke-fueled excesses 1980s Wall Street, through bogus wars, wasted presidencies and forgotten cities. Coming in late 2025
